Extracting archives

Extracting archives

Extract ZIP, 7z and TAR archives into a dataroom, follow the progress and avoid duplicate uploads.

On this page

You can store an archive (ZIP, 7z, TAR and files compressed with gzip, bzip2 or xz) as a single file or extract it into the dataroom. If you choose Extract archive when uploading, AITEZA creates a subdataroom for every folder in the archive and stores every file in it separately. Supported files are then processed as usual and can be searched in chat.

Extraction runs in the background. You can leave the page or keep working while an archive is extracted.

Following the progress

While an archive is uploading or being extracted, it is listed at the top of the dataroom, above its datarooms and files:

  • Uploading … 45 %: The archive is still being transferred. Keep the browser tab open until then.
  • Waiting to be extracted: The archive has arrived and will be extracted shortly.
  • Extracting: 1,240 of 3,512 files: The files are stored one after the other. New subdatarooms and files appear while extraction is still running.
  • Done: All files are stored. Processing individual files can take a little longer; you see their state in the file list as usual.

Large archives with thousands of files are deliberately processed at a steady pace so AITEZA stays fast for everyone else, so extraction can take a while. If AITEZA is updated in between, extraction continues where it stopped.

Uploading the same archive again

AITEZA recognizes when you upload an archive into a dataroom it was already extracted into, or is being extracted into, even under a different file name. You are then asked whether to import it again. Importing again creates all of its files a second time.

When an archive cannot be extracted

The entry names the reason, for example:

  • Damaged, encrypted or unsupported format: The archive is stored as a single file instead. Password-protected files inside an archive are skipped. RAR archives are always stored as a single file.
  • Too many files or extracted content too large: Split the archive into several smaller archives.
  • Unsafe paths: The archive contains paths such as “…/” that lead outside the archive and is not extracted for security reasons.

Files already stored are kept in every case.
